Highlighter Privacy Policy
Summary. Highlighter runs no developer server. There is no sign-up and no information that identifies you is collected. The highlights and notes you create are kept in your browser's storage, and the developer cannot read them.
1. What is not collected
Highlighter does not collect any of the following.
- Information that identifies you, such as name, email address or phone number
- Account information — Highlighter has no sign-up and no login
- Location data and payment information
- Advertising identifiers and device identifiers
- Usage statistics, event logs and crash reports
- The contents of pages you did not highlight, your browsing history, and your search queries
2. What you create
Using the extension creates the following. All of it exists only because you highlighted or typed it yourself.
- The highlighted text and the colour you chose
- The content, position and size of notes attached to a highlight
- The address (URL) of the page containing the highlight, and the position within the document
- Words saved to the word list, and their descriptions
- Drawings made on the page
- Extension settings such as colours and button visibility
This information is used to restore your highlights in the same place when you return, and to show your records in the popup and dashboard. It is not used for anything else.
3. Where it is stored, and sync
The information in section 2 is kept in Chrome's extension storage. The default is to store it only on this device, and cross-device sync is off.
- Default — this device only (
storage.local). The data does not leave the device. Drawings are large, so they are always stored this way even if sync is on. - Optional — cross-device sync (
storage.sync). This works only if you turn on “Chrome account sync” yourself in the extension settings. When on, your highlights, notes and word list are sent through your Google account to other devices signed in to the same account. That transfer and storage are handled by Google's Chrome sync feature and follow Google's policies. You can turn it off again at any time in the settings.
In neither case is anything transmitted to a developer server. Highlighter has no server of its own, and the developer cannot view what you have saved.
4. Extension permissions
The permissions Highlighter requests, and why.
- Access to all sites
- So that you can select text on any web page, leave a highlight or note, and have it restored when you return. Page content is not read in order to send or store it; only the parts you highlight yourself are saved.
- Storage
- To save highlights, notes, the word list and settings, and to sync them across devices.
- Favicon
- To show each site's icon in the site lists inside the popup and dashboard.
5. External transmission and third parties
Highlighter does not use any of the following.
- Its own server, or any network request directed to the developer
- Advertising or ad networks
- Analytics tools or behavioural tracking
- Third-party SDKs and external content delivery networks (CDNs)
Every resource the extension uses, including its fonts, is bundled inside the extension, so viewing a page does not send a request to an external server.
Because no personal information is collected, there is none to provide or sell to third parties. What you save is not used for advertising, marketing or AI training.
6. Retention and deletion
Records remain until you delete them or remove the extension. There is no separate retention period.
- Individual highlights and notes can be deleted at any time on the page itself, or from the popup and dashboard
- Removing the extension also deletes the stored data
- If you used sync storage, the data is deleted on your other devices as well through Chrome sync
- Because no copy exists on a developer server, the developer cannot recover deleted records
7. Your rights
Highlighter does not collect personal information, so there is no one to ask for access, correction or deletion. You can view, edit and delete everything you have saved yourself, from the popup and the dashboard.
8. Children's privacy
Highlighter is not directed at children and does not collect any personal information, including age.
9. Changes to this policy
If the extension's behaviour changes and this policy has to be revised, the content of this page will be updated along with the date at the top.
